Good morning
Back by popular demand (well, his demand at
least), this week’s blog has been taken over once again by my partner in crime
at Fuzzy Designs – I’ll let him explain what’s been going on.
When I started doing spanner art the original
idea was to try and make the spanners look semi-lifelike so I concentrated on
subjects like fishes, birds or even dragons. When I received another batch recently
I thought it might be fun to just let the spanners be spanners and integrate
them into the artwork. You can be the judge as to how successful I’ve been.
The idea for this piece had been rumbling
around in my head for ages but it was surprisingly difficult to find three
different size spanners, none of which had any Branding on one side. Once that
hurdle was overcome, it was relatively quick to letter the spanners and place
them on a suitably distressed background.
This adjustable wrench is massive, over eighteen
inches long when fully extended. Because the wrench is asymmetric, I decided the
background should be too - although I did use the same colour pinstriping on
the wrench and background to help tie things together.
I am a huge fan of Piet Mondrian, the
abstract artist, and these three small spanners (apparently used to construct
bedsteads) seemed to need nothing more than a very simple background – and what’s
more simple than a Mondrian painting? In the unlikely event of this ever being
displayed in a gallery, I think it would have to be called “Composition with
spanners. No.3”!
As always please let me know what you think
of this load of old spanners.
