Fuzzy Designs for Christmas - 11 December 2023
“S” spanners have been a constant source of ideas from the very beginning. They just have a fluidity about them which, to me, suggests a sort of fish-like movement. However, this piece takes a different approach because, rather than being engraved and then painted with transparent colours, I opted to go down the skeleton route instead. I added a mist effect around.
Both the pinstriping pieces have a Christmas feel to them but I would have to admit that was completely accidental. The final choice of shapes and colours didn’t really come together until a long way through the creative process.

This piece itself was very simple to put together, the only slight issue was finding
a way which mounted the hammer (which is an old toffee hammer) securely.
Spanner Art (with no Spanners!) - 18 July 2023
a sump plate from a Kawasaki motorcycle with a coat of paint turned it into an interesting mount for a simple clock.

I’d never seen a spanner quite like this before but, with just one set of teeth and a strange tap thread at the back, it was an obvious choice for something long lurking in deep water.
a purely decorative piece which was inspired by the lines radiating across the jaws of the spanner. They lent themselves perfectly to being filled with rainbow colours and then the idea of wrapping some rainbow flames around the spanner popped into my head.
inspired dragon flying through the night sky. It doesn’t really show in the pictures but the back half of the dragon has been painted in a special paint which changes colour from a dark blue to a light green.
ANOTHER RETURN OF SPANNER ART! - 05 May 2022
The Clocks: these are both made from motorcycle sump plates and I thought the large circular hole (which originally housed an oil filter) could accommodate a decent sized clock face instead.
The Underwater Pliers: both of these
went through my tried and tested method of transformation: namely a thorough
clean up, then scales and fins were engraved and finally suitable glass paint
was applied over the top. The rays of light on the dark piece are actually
luminous paint so they have an eerie glow at night.

Flowers and Sunshine: Finding three
small spanners for the flowers was easy, finding a suitably small sprocket for
the sun was a lot more difficult. Patience paid off in the end though and I’m
pleased with the result – simple but effective!
